7 Essential Things to Know Before Traveling for the First Time!

Traveling for the first time can be simultaneously the most exciting and nerve wracking experience of your life. With so much to do and experience, it can be easy to feel underprepared and overwhelmed (never a good mix). However, these top tips will teach you everything you need to get you raring to go!

1. Research Your Destination

For your first time travelling, I would say it's a good idea to have a general research of your destination before you go, especially when it comes to local customs, laws and social norms. If you are feeling worried about it, it's also a good idea to plan your route in advance and work out how you will travel between each of the places! You can always adapt and change the plan when you get out there if needed.

2. Get Your Documents in Order!

Before you leave, make sure you have all the necessary documents in order. This includes your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance, and any other relevant paperwork. It's a good idea to make copies of these documents and keep them in a separate place, in case of loss or theft. It's also a good idea to download any useful apps that will make the whole experience easier- here are some of my favourites.

3. Prepare for the Flight

Long flights can be surprisingly tiring (flying to Australia just about killed me off by the end). Make sure you prepare accordingly! I'd always recommend packing a eye mask, ear plugs and comfortable, warm clothing. I also would always recommend bringing some of your own snacks because plane food can be so hit and miss and airports are always so expensive.

4. Pack Smart

Quite ironic that I am giving this piece of advice as Queen of overpacking, but please please learn from my mistakes! Don't forget that whatever you pack in that huge backpack or suitcase...you actually need to carry around with you. Lay out everything you think you need, and then half it. Your back will thank you in the long run.

5. Plan Your Budget

Unsurprisingly, money is one of the biggest stresses within travel. It's important to have a realistic budget in mind which includes not only the cost of flights and accommodation but also food, transportation, and any activities you plan to do. It's a good idea to research the cost of living in your destination beforehand to avoid any surprises.

6. Stay Safe

It goes without saying that safety should always be your absolute top priority while travelling. Take precautions such removing expensive jewellery beforehand, not carrying large amounts of cash and not flashing expensive electrical items such as camera and phones. Another good tip is to always separate bank cards so if one is stolen or lost you always have a backup. I usually do this by keeping my credit card locked away back at my hostel and taking my travel debit card out with me on a daily basis.

7. Be Open Minded

And finally, be open minded! Travelling is the single most amazing, beautiful, challenging, awe inspiring and life changing thing you will ever do. Make memories, enjoy every moment and soak it all up. These are the days that you will always look back on!
